Day 4 of the Cooper Ouellette trial brought emotional testimony, heated exchanges and new questions about what really happened the night 17-year-old Sophie died.

Ouellette is charged with first-degree manslaughter and delivering alcohol to a minor in connection with Sophie’s May 2023 death. Prosecutors allege he ran over his girlfriend during a heated argument. Ouellette maintains Sophie fell out of his truck while he was driving her home.

On Tuesday, friends who were with the couple that night took the stand, describing Ouellette’s heavy drinking and testifying about alleged physical altercations between the teens. One witness described seeing Ouellette kick Sophie, while another recalled receiving a frightening message from Sophie shortly before her death: “I’m scared.”

The courtroom also heard a drunken voicemail recorded as Ouellette and a friend left the party. And in a major moment for the defense, a medical examiner testified that he does NOT believe Sophie was run over by the truck, offering a different explanation for her fatal injuries.

Some witnesses clashed with defense attorneys, tempers flared and the medical evidence raised new questions about how Sophie died.

Tonight on “Courtroom Insider,” Grace Wong joins Nate Eaton with the latest from the Connecticut courtroom, and we break down all the big moments.
