IDAHO FALLS — A 24-year-old man is now facing up to 35 years in prison after allegedly firing a gun at another vehicle.

Kaden Ty Thompson is facing two felony charges, which include aggravated assault and unlawful discharge of a firearm at a dwelling house, occupied building, vehicle or mobile home.

An enhancement is also included on the assault charge for the use of a deadly weapon, which can add another 15 years to the final sentence.

Thompson has been appointed a public defender. The Idaho State Public Defender’s Office does not comment on active cases.

According to the court documents, on Oct. 19, Idaho State Police were dispatched to the area of North 95th East and U.S. Highway 26 at around 7:30 p.m.

A deputy with the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office spoke with the victim and relayed the information to a trooper.

The victim recalled seeing a small Honda, possibly gold- or pewter-colored, and believed it had an extremely loud exhaust as it sped away. He also observed the Honda spewing excessive smoke.

Though the victim reportedly did not realize he’d been shot at, the document states that a family member of the victim, who was in another vehicle, had seen the driver of the Honda stick a black pistol out the window and fire around eight rounds.

The family members could only get a partial license plate.

The deputy who spoke with the victim before the trooper’s arrival also found two 9mm casings at the intersection.

The documents detail a vehicle that matched the description provided by the victim’s family, which was involved in a prior road rage incident in January that also included a firearm.

The vehicle was registered to Thompson, and an address was obtained where a detective with ISP began monitoring the home for the vehicle.

The Honda appeared and was reported to have a loud exhaust when it arrived at the address.

The next day, detectives with ISP went to the intersection where the alleged shooting had occurred and found four spent 9mm casings.

It was reported that, out of the casings that were found, two brands that make 9mm ammo were used during the incident.

On Oct. 28, a search warrant was obtained for the residence and Thompson was detained.

During a search of the Honda, two Glock magazines were discovered, each containing two different brands of 9mm ammunition. Inside the residence, three 9mm firearms were found, along with magazines that held 9mm ammunition from the same two brands found at the scene.

Thompson is scheduled to appear before Magistrate Judge Wiley Dennert for a preliminary hearing at 1 p.m. on Nov. 10.

Although Thompson has been accused of a crime, that does not necessarily mean he committed it. Everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
