Machado had surgery on a torn ligament in his left knee back in October. He was hoping to be ready to play at the start of the season, but his knee is still sore, something that the team was not anticipating.

“I don’t know if I’ll make Opening Day or not,” Machado said on Sunday. “It’s not in the back of my mind. I’m not worried about playing games yet. I just want to get healthy. Once I get healthy I’ll be ready to roll and keep playing and just get back into playing mode.”

The 21-year-old Machado was set to get his knee looked at by a doctor to see if he was ready to take his rehab to the next level, but he hasn’t been able to run in nearly a week. It will still be a few days until he’ll be able to test himself on the base paths.

Last season, Machado emerged as one of the bright young starts in Major League Baseball. In 156 games, Machado hit .283 with 14 home runs and drove in 71 runs.
