The Oscar-winning actress has certainly tackled her share of difficult roles in her career, but she admits that playing this character was particularly tough.

“There are aspects of it that were just really painful to imagine and to put myself in and through,” she said on Friday’s Good Morning America. “But I’m glad I did it, ultimately.”

However, it did take some convincing for Streep to take the role in the John Wells-directed film, which she admits has a “wonderful screenplay” with “fantastic parts for everyone.”

“But I wasn’t sure I really wanted to enter the house of pain that my character lives in,” she added.

Streep’s co-stars — including Julia Roberts, Julianne Nicholson and Juliette Lewis — helped make working on the film a real treat, the 64-year-old actress said. “I just had the most amazing group of people around me,” she told GMA‘s Robin Roberts. “I had three Jules, my family jewels.”

August: Osage County hits theaters in limited release on Christmas Day.
