NYC Mayor de Blasio to Meet with Police Unions Tuesday
Published at(NEW YORK) — New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio will meet with police unions on Tuesday, one day after he faced boos from officers at a New York Police Department graduation ceremony.
According to de Blasio’s office, he is scheduled to speak with leaders from five major police unions, as well as NYPD Commissioner William Bratton and other NYPD leadership. The meeting will take place behind closed doors after weeks of tension between de Blasio and the city’s police officers.
The police union has been furious at de Blasio for statements that were viewed as sympathetic to protesters demonstrating against the police after a grand jury declined to indict an officer in the death of Eric Garner, who died while being arrested and subdued for selling loose cigarettes. At one point the mayor, who has a mixed-race son, said he warned his son to be careful if he is ever stopped by police.
After the deaths of officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu earlier this month, the police union president said that de Blasio had “blood on his hands” for encouraging hostility to police.
