Wall Street Posts Gains As Unemployment Applications Increase Slightly, Retail Sales Mixed

tarabird/iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — Thursday marked another day of gains on Wall Street, while reports showed consumer spending increased in January and unemployment claims jumped slightly.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average posted gains of 110.24 to a close of 17,972.38.
The Nasdaq climbed 56.43 to 4,857.61, and the S&P 500 finished the session at 2,088.48, up 19.95 from its open.
The U.S Labor Department says that applications for unemployment benefits increased by 25,000, remaining at a seasonally adjusted 304,000. The latter figure remains relatively low — indicating healthy hiring.
The U.S. Census Bureau released data Thursday saying that while overall retail sales fell 0.8 percent, excluding gas prices and auto sales, retail increased by 0.2 percent in January.
