Speaking with People magazine, the 40-year-old E! News host says she and husband Bill Rancic learned on New Year’s Eve that their surrogate, who was pregnant with the embryo, had miscarried.

Calling it a “painful” experience, Rancic shares, “We were so optimistic with this last embryo. We thought, ‘This is definitely going to work. This is our last shot.’”

The couple had three remaining embryos following the birth of their son, Duke, via a surrogate in 2012. Two embryos were successfully implanted into their surrogate last year. The surrogate miscarried weeks later.

Rancic says she and her husband are “open to everything” when it comes to expanding their family, including adoption. She elaborates, “I think adoption is a beautiful gift you’re giving each other. And it’s funny, I’m even more open to [adoption] than I was before. Because I think to myself, ‘I love Duke so much, if I couldn’t take care of him, I hope there would be someone else who would love him.’”

Rancic’s conversation with People magazine, which includes her denial of rumors that she’s suffering from an eating disorder, and touches upon her battle with scoliosis when she was younger, appears in the issue hitting newsstands on Friday.

Rancic releases her memoir, Going Off Script, next Tuesday.
