REXBURG — A Brigham Young University-Idaho student was rushed to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center Saturday, Nov. 21, after she was impaled on a hand rail at an apartment complex.

Rexburg Police Capt. Randy Lewis said the 23-year-old woman and some friends were unloading a Christmas tree out of a 2007 Dodge pickup truck at the Heritage Apartments.

The woman was standing between the back of the truck and a stairwell hand rail when Lewis says the driver’s foot slipped off the clutch and the truck lurched backwards pinning the student.

“The metal handrail went inside her body,” Lewis said. “It was a serious incident.”

The student was taken by ground ambulance to EIRMC with serious injuries. Authorities said the student is expected to be okay.

Police have ruled this an accident. No charges are expected to be filed.
