RIGBY — EastIdahoNews.com was proud to sponsor town hall political meetings in Jefferson County this week. Nearly 100 people gathered in the Harwood Elementary School gym on Wednesday and Thursday night as we spoke with candidates running for county commission, prosecutor, and fire commission.

We also interviewed the sheriff, who is running unopposed, and District 2 County Commissioner Scott Hancock, who is also running unopposed.

The town halls were part of a series of forums featuring candidates running for political office in East Idaho. The Idaho primary will be held May 17.

Two candidates are running for Central Fire Commissioner in sub-district 3.

Lori Newton and Roger Anderson are both on the ballot after their race was thrown out last November because their names were left off the ballot in some areas of the district.

The candidates agreed to sit down with EastIdahoNews.com reporter Nate Eaton. They were given 60 seconds for an opening and closing statement. They also answered questions from the audience and the following questions posed by EastIdahoNews.com:

  1. One of you should have been elected to this seat last November. Instead, your race has been extended six months. What has changed in the race since then and how are you more ready today than last fall?
  2. What do you feel is the main responsibility of a fire commissioner and how will you work to fulfill that responsibility?
  3. What do you think is the biggest problem facing the Central Fire District, and how to you plan to fix it?
  4. How do you plan to develop a strong relationship with the fire district leaders and volunteers?
  5. Why are you the right person for the job?
