THE LATEST: Nearly 2,500 without electricity, multiple power lines down, crews fight field fire
Published at | Updated atIDAHO FALLS — Strong winds blew a power transformer into a ditch Monday afternoon causing a field fire on the west side of Idaho Falls.
The fire started near Newman Drive and West 17th Street around 4:45 p.m. Crews responded to the scene and were able to contain the blaze and put it out before it caused major damage.


Multiple power outages were reported nearby in the area of Broadway St. and 35th West after a large tree fell on power lines. Firefighters were able to contain the area until Idaho Falls Power crews arrived to make repairs.
Several other downed trees and power lines were reported across Idaho Falls due to strong winds:
· 35th W. 410 S. Large tree that took out several power poles. Several power lines across the road.
· 2945 W. 17th S. A power transformer caught fire which then started a ditch bank on fire. Crews have the fire out and are keeping an eye on it.
· 5737 S. 15th W. A tree took out the power and then landed on a house. Crews have cleared the scene here. As of right now, it is not reported that there was anybody inside the home.
· 55th East, power line down
· E. 22nd and Boulevard, tree down across multiple power lines.
Additional crews have been called in to respond as needed, according to Idaho Falls Fire spokeswoman Kerry Hammon.
Rocky Mountain Power reports around 50 power outages affecting nearly 2,800 customers from Shelley to Rexburg and also in the McCammon.
A high wind warning remains in effect for eastern Idaho until 7 p.m. The National Weather Service reports strong and damaging winds between 35 to 45 mph are expected, with gusts in excess of 60 mph. The following areas will be impacted by the highest winds: Rexburg, Rigby, Idaho Falls, Blackfoot, Pocatello, Burley, Malad City, Oakley, and Rockland.
