IDAHO FALLS – A man is in stable condition after being rescued from the Snake River in Idaho Falls Saturday morning.

The rescue occurred at 10:45 a.m., according to a news release from the Idaho Falls Fire Department.

The 56-year-old man and his wife were walking their dog near the river at the Gem Lake Marina. The dog fell in the water and the man went in to get it out. The dog made it out safely, but the man couldn’t pull himself out.

A witness told IFFD dispatch the man’s head was above the water but he was sinking. A water rescue team showed up a short time later. The man was reportedly holding onto the ice about 30 feet from shore and they tossed him a rope. Firefighters ended up diving in and wrapping a rope under the victim’s arm. He was taken by ambulance to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.

Two ambulances, one engine, a ladder truck and a battalion chief responded. Several deputies from the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office also assisted.
