Man reportedly arrested in a stolen car the second time this week

RIGBY — Police in Rigby arrested a man well known to local law enforcement in a stolen car for the second time in a week.

The Rigby Police Department with help from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office arrested 24-year-old Austin Blakely on Friday. The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office arrested Blakely in a similar incident Monday morning, but prosecutors ended up not filing more charges to allow time for more investigation.

Friday’s incident began when someone called in a traffic complaint of a stolen car. Police reports indicate officers found Blakely behind the wheel of a vehicle on 300 North next to Rigby High School.

Authorities found methamphetamine inside the car, along with 24 oxycodone pills and numerous syringes “loaded with a substance that will later be tested.” They also found a scale, baggies for distributing drugs, multiple cell phones and a small amount of marijuana.

Investigators booked Blakely into the Jefferson County Jail on felony charges of trafficking methamphetamine, felony possession of a narcotic and felony possession of a stolen vehicle. Misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia were also included. He also had a warrant from Idaho Falls.

Blakely’s criminal history is extensive. Blakely was out on bail on several pending criminal cases. Among them, Blakey is expected to enter a plea on a case where he is alleged to have shot a man in Idaho Falls. This year, Blakely also has been facing felony drug, weapon and domestic assault charges in separate cases.

Although Blakely is accused of crimes, it does not necessarily mean he committed them. Everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
