Man charged with voyeurism makes guilty plea after agreement

REXBURG — A 27-year-old man charged in 2021 for peeping and videotaping through windows at a women’s apartment complex in Rexburg will be sentenced in May.

Brooks Wilson was charged with felony video voyeurism in December 2021. The charge carries up to five years in prison and a $50,000 fine. Wilson at first pleaded not guilty last March but on Wednesday, he changed his plea to guilty as part of a plea agreement.

Wilson agreed to obtain a psychosexual evaluation before sentencing and both the defense and prosecution are free to argue whatever underlying prison sentence they feel is appropriate.

In exchange for the plea agreement, the state agreed to recommend a suspended sentence and a period of supervised probation. The state also agreed not to file additional charges for other videos made on or about Dec. 14, 2021.

According to court documents, the Rexburg Police Department was called to Greenbrier Apartments in Dec. 2021 for a report of a man walking around the women’s side of the complex, peeping through windows and taking pictures. Officers arrived and found Wilson matching the suspect’s description outside the apartments.

The officer asked Wilson what he was doing, and he said he was dumpster diving for items to possibly sell online.

The officer told him why the police were there. Wilson denied looking through the women’s windows and taking photos. When police asked to see the most recent pictures taken on Wilson’s phone, he unlocked it. He admitted to recording the women before starting to delete the videos, according to court documents.

Police took Wilson’s phone so he could not delete any more images and placed him under arrest.

According to an amended criminal complaint, it says he took videos of a woman in her bedroom undressing.

Wilson is scheduled for sentencing on May 15 at 11 a.m. at the Madison County Courthouse.
