U.S. Bank closes five local branches

BLACKFOOT — The days of tellers greeting customers by name and offering small-town service at local bank branches are fading as U.S. Bank, a longtime fixture in many communities, prepares to close several nearby locations, starting with the Blackfoot branch on April 30.
The Blackfoot closure is one of several branch shutdowns scheduled in southern and eastern Idaho over the next month. The Montpelier branch closed earlier this week on April 17. The Preston branch at 1 South State Street will close April 23, followed by the Mackay branch at 202 South Main Street on May 12 and the Malad branch at 25 East 50 South on May 19.
The closures are part of a broader restructuring effort as the bank shifts its focus toward digital banking and consolidates its physical locations across Idaho. Banks nationwide have reduced their physical presence due to increased reliance on mobile banking and reduced foot traffic at traditional branches.
Jake Holtrop, spokesperson for U.S. Bank, said the decision reflects a growing trend in customer behavior.
“Clients’ banking preferences and behaviors are changing, including a rapid migration toward digital and mobile banking platforms, and a desire for greater simplicity,” Holtrop told EastIdahoNews.com. “As we evolve along with our clients, we are reevaluating our physical footprint, and in some instances, consolidating branch locations in select markets.”
U.S. Bank notified customers of the affected branches in January and assured them their accounts and services would remain uninterrupted.
Holtrop emphasized that while the closure may be disruptive, U.S. Bank is committed to making the transition smooth for clients and employees.
“Although several rural branches are closing, the bank continues to invest in its digital platforms and is opening or enhancing locations in other markets where in-person demand remains strong,” Holtrop said.
“We are proud to have served our clients at these branches and hope to continue supporting the community through our remaining locations and expanding digital and voice offerings,” he concluded.
