SUGAR CITY — A community tradition is returning to Sugar City this spring and organizers are inviting residents of all ages to dig in —literally.

Sugar City will host its annual Arbor Day celebration on Friday, May 8, at 10 a.m. at Triangle Park, located at the corner of North Front Street and West First North.

This year’s theme, “Trees Anchor Our Town,” highlights the importance of trees in shaping both the landscape and the community.

The event will feature a mix of hands-on activities, student involvement and a ceremonial tree planting that has become a hallmark of the celebration.

Lynsey Bean, an organizer with the city’s Beautification Committee, said the Arbor Day event is something the community looks forward to each year.

“From planting trees to celebrating young artists, the Arbor Day event offers something for everyone,” Bean said. “We have grades 3-5 participate in an art contest that gets judged by the high school art class. We award winners in each grade.”

The celebration goes beyond art and awards. Students also play a direct role in the tree planting ceremony.

“The kids who attend also help to plant the tree, with each of them taking turns to scoop a shovel of dirt on the tree,” Bean said.

Music will also be part of the program, with students from Kershaw Intermediate School performing songs centered on trees and the environment.

A representative from the National Forestry office in Boise is expected to attend and present the city with its Tree City USA designation, which is an honor Sugar City has maintained for 21 years.

“This marks a significant achievement, I think, that’s a pretty amazing accomplishment,” Bean said.

Community members are encouraged to attend, enjoy the activities and take part in a tradition that continues to grow stronger each year.
