MACKAY — A hiker was reportedly rescued after surviving an avalanche near Mount Borah in Custer County on Sunday.
According to a Facebook post from the Custer County Sheriff’s Office, dispatch was notified at 2:43 pm on Sunday of an injured hiker near Mount Borah.
The man had reportedly been caught in an avalanche.
Custer County Search and Rescue was dispatched, and the Idaho National Guard TALON96, a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter out of Gowen Field, performed a hoist operation to extract the hiker.

The man sustained several injuries, but the helicopter was able to bring him to the awaiting Mackay Ambulance for an immediate medical assessment. Life Flight Network then transported him to the hospital.
“As the recreation season goes into full swing, we would like to remind everyone to be prepared, travel in groups, and carry a device such as a Garmin to help notify us in case things go wrong,” says the Sheriff’s Office in the post. “Once again, we are grateful to the Idaho National Guard and Life Flight Network for continuing to answer the call!”
