POCATELLO — With triple-digit temperatures in the forecast this weekend and beyond, those hoping to cool off at the ICCU Splash Pad at O.K. Ward Park will have to seek other options.

The City of Pocatello says the splash pad is temporarily closed due to a significant electrical issue caused by a July 4 power outage in the area.

One alternative to the splash pad is the City of Pocatello’s cooling shelters, open now to help residents beat the heat.

The Pocatello City Hall lobby, the Marshall Public Library, and the Pocatello Animal Shelter are designated places for community members to hang out and cool off when the temperature outside is extreme.

The three shelters will remain open for the next 45 days during normal business hours. City officials will then evaluate weather conditions to determine whether to extend the program.

The City Hall location is also offering free bottled water and electrical outlets for charging devices.

“When the Council Chambers aren’t being used for meetings, that space will also be available,” said city spokeswoman Marlise Irby.

City officials said the Parks and Recreation Department is working to complete repairs and restore service to the splash pad as quickly as possible.

“We know how important the splash pad is during these triple-digit temperatures, and we appreciate everyone’s patience while we work through the issue,” the city said in a statement.

The city will provide an update when the splash pad is repaired and ready to reopen.
