Evacuation of downtown Rexburg caused by hand grenade turned into local police station

REXBURG — The Rexburg Police Department released more information Wednesday afternoon about the situation that caused downtown businesses to evacuate.
According to a post on RPD’s Facebook page, an individual entered the Rexburg Police Station to turn in an item obtained at an estate sale.
The individual had purchased military memorabilia, and upon returning home, had found what appeared to be a WWII-era hand grenade among the items purchased.
When officers found out that a grenade had been brought into the police station, the area was secured, and evacuations began.
Idaho Falls Police Department’s Explosives Ordnance Disposal team responded to Rexburg, and the device was professionally destroyed.
Traffic reopened around 4 p.m., with no threat to the public.
