PRESTON — Incumbent Franklin County Coroner Ron Smellie has secured another term in office after defeating independent challenger Todd Goodsell in Tuesday’s general election.
According to election results released by Franklin County, Smellie received 1,609 votes, or approximately 71%, compared to Goodsell’s 647 votes, or 29%.
The victory allows Smellie to continue serving as the county’s coroner, a position responsible for investigating deaths that occur under certain circumstances, including those that are sudden, unexpected, suspicious or unattended by a physician.
The office serves residents throughout Franklin County, including Preston, Franklin, Weston, Dayton and surrounding rural communities.
As the county’s population grows, the coroner’s office continues to play an important role in public safety and death investigations, as well as providing information to families following the loss of a loved one.
Because election results became available late, EastIdahoNews.com was unable to reach Smellie for comment before publication.
