At its Tuesday meeting, the Palisades Presbytery became the 86th presbytery to approve the amendment, meaning more than half of the U.S. Presbyterian Church’s presbyteries have adopted the same amendment. By definition, marriage is now defined in the church’s constitution as a “unique commitment between two people, traditionally a man and a woman.”

“Marriage is a gift God has given to all humankind for the well-being of the entire human family,” the new language reads.

A General Assembly approved the amendment last summer, but required a majority of presbyteries to ratify it before it could become part of the church’s constitution.

The church says the change will take effect on June 21, 2015.
