Weather, road damage prompts speed reduction on ID 33

MADISON COUNTY — If you will be traveling on Idaho Highway 33 near Sugar City anytime soon, you’ll need to slow down.
The posted speed limit on a four-mile stretch of the highway from Teton to Newdale has been reduced from 60 mph to 45 mph.
Isaac Payne, a spokesman for Madison County Sheriff’s Office, tells EastIdahoNews.com this is a temporary change designed to promote safety for drivers.
“Due to weather and road deterioration, we decided to drop the speed for safety reasons,” Payne said.
The speed reduction went into effect Tuesday. Payne says the length of the speed reduction will depend on the weather. Once the weather clears up, the Idaho Transportation Department is planning to repair cracks and potholes in the section of road.
“Because of the weather, (ITD) can’t make the needed repairs. They need a dry road to be able to make those repairs,” Payne says.
Earlier this month, this portion of the highway was closed to traffic for several days due to blowing and drifting snow. More snow is anticipated this weekend.
Payne says they do not foresee another road closure at this point, but they are urging residents to be safe while traveling.
