Flash flood damages roads, fields in Fremont County

ASHTON – Fremont County is feeling the effects of a flash flood after a Saturday night thunderstorm.
Between 2 and 3.25 inches of rain pummeled the Ashton area in about an hour, according to a news release from Fremont County Emergency Management. A severe thunderstorm warning and flood advisory were issued before the storm began.
The downpour resulted in widespread damage to roads. Private roads, especially those with a slope and gravel surface, have the most damage. Officials didn’t specify how bad it was, but it could take up to several weeks to repair.
Emergency Manager Keith Richey says there was extensive damage to farm fields. Several fields that were recently cut are a total loss. There are also some reports of damage to farm buildings.
Deputies rescued 15 people who were stranded while floating Big Springs to Macks Inn. Though some were suffering from cold exposure, no major injuries were reported.
The flood advisory is no longer in effect. Thunderstorms may occur in some parts of Fremont County Sunday. Temperatures in the mid to upper 80s are expected.
