POCATELLO — Incumbent Bannock County Coroner Torey Danner has secured another term in office after defeating independent challenger Wilson Simmons in Tuesday’s general election.

According to election results released by Bannock County, Danner received 16,925 votes, or 58%, compared with Simmons’ 12,068 votes, or roughly 42%.

The victory allows Danner to continue overseeing the Bannock County Coroner’s Office, which is responsible for investigating deaths that occur under certain circumstances, including those that are sudden, unexpected, suspicious or unattended by a physician.

Tanner told EastIdahoNews.com that he’s extremely grateful for all the support.

“This win allows us to keep up the momentum as we modernize and evolve our office,” he said. “It’s extremely important moving forward to make the climb and serve the county better.”

Danner, a Pocatello native and Pocatello High School graduate, has served as Bannock County coroner since August 2021, when he was appointed to replace former Coroner Ely Taysom. He was elected to his first full term in 2022.

The coroner works closely with law enforcement agencies, medical professionals and other officials to determine the cause and manner of death when an investigation is required, while providing information to families following the unexpected loss of a loved one.

Tanner said he has been burning the candle at both ends throughout the election campaign and is eager for things to get back to normal.

“One thing I’ve learned, it’s extremely difficult to run a campaign and the coroner’s office,” he said. “It’s been a 24/7 job”

The Bannock County Coroner’s Office serves residents throughout the county, including Pocatello, Chubbuck, Inkom, McCammon and surrounding rural communities.
