(NEW YORK) — The sky was the limit for the new James Bond film at the weekend box office.
The 23rd Bond film, Skyfall, opened with an estimated $87.8 million from Friday through Sunday — a U.S. debut record for the franchise. The total surpassed the $67.5 million raked in by the 2008 Bond flick Quantum of Solace during its premiere weekend.
Skyfall also earned $2.2 million from Thursday-night previews. Overall, it has collected $518.6 million worldwide, having opened in several foreign markets before arriving in the U.S.
Last week’s box office champ, Wreck-It Ralph, fell to second place, drawing $33.1 million.
Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln opened strongly in limited release, raising $900,000 in just 11 theaters. It expands nationwide this Friday.
