POCATELLO – Commitment, good decisions, strong ethics and solid goals — those are the keys to having a good life, Melaleuca Inc. founder and CEO Frank VanderSloot said Wednesday.

The Idaho Falls businessman was the keynote speaker at this year’s Professional of the Year award ceremony at Idaho State University.

The Idaho State Journal and Southeast Idaho Business Journal sponsored the event, which showcased more than 40 local professionals and businesses making a difference in their communities.

VanderSloot told the audience he’s been successful by helping his employees, customers and others achieve their goals. He encouraged the nearly 200 other professionals in the room to do the same.

“If you stop and think about it, not very many times in life do you have someone come up and say, ‘What are you goals?’” VanderSloot said. “(At Melaleuca) we’ve asked a lot of people what their goals are. We endeavor to help others reach their goals.”

VanderSloot said he’s learned most people have common goals and it’s important for employees and employers to align their personal values with their professional work.

“Everybody just wants to be happy,” VanderSloot said. “They just want to have a great life.”

Additionally, VanderSloot encouraged employers to hire people who are bright, passionate and committed to strong ethics. He also cautioned the audience not to forget about relationships outside of the workplace.

“Relationships, family, the concept of giving love and getting love (are equally important),” VanderSloot said. He called his father a great example of someone who loved him unconditionally.

“Let’s have great relationships and not let life pass us by,” he said.

Kent Oram, Idaho Central Credit Union CEO, was named Professional of the Year during the awards ceremony and he said his company has grown by employing VanderSloot’s principles.
