UPDATE: Meek has given more details on the kidnapping.

IDAHO FALLS — A man with ties to Idaho Falls was kidnapped in Mexico, but says he is now safe.

Bob Meek, who recently moved to Utah, was traveling on business in Mexico when he says he was kidnapped.

Meek works for Utah Onions Inc., where he was named CEO in April. He was an Idaho Falls stake president with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints prior to moving to Utah.

Multiple members of his Idaho Falls stake congregation said they received regular updates from church leaders on Meeks’ situation Friday.

Meek spoke with EastIdahoNews.com briefly on the phone around 4 p.m. He said he was safe at a police department in Mexico and confirmed he had been held for ransom.

Meek was unable to go into detail about the kidnapping but said, “Please just let everyone know I am safe now.”

EastIdahoNews.com reached out to the FBI and officials confirmed Meek was in Mexican police custody Friday afternoon.

Family friends say Meek is leaving the country and is currently being driven from Chihuahua to El Paso, Texas. He plans to return to Salt Lake City within the next 24 hours.
