Published at(LOS ANGELES) — The first Oscars of the season have been handed out in Hollywood, as the Governors Awards gave the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences a second chance to recognize some movie-makers who may have been overlooked.
This year’s un-televised, private ceremony handed out honorary Oscars to actress Maureen O’Hara, filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, screenwriter Jean-Claude Carriere, and actor and activist Harry Belafonte.
Several stars cheered them on, including Sidney Poitier, Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Hilary Swank, and Ron Howard.
