(ISTANBUL) — Pope Francis is in Istanbul Saturday, his second stop on a three-day trip to Turkey.
The pope visited Istanbul’s famous Blue Mosque and prayed alongside the city’s Muslim religious leader.
Later he toured Haghia Sofia, a one time Byzantine church that was converted to a Mosque following the Muslim conquest of the city in 1453. Today it is a museum and one the city’s most popular attractions.
The pontiff is using his visit to the predominantly Muslim country to appeal for peace in neighboring Iraq and Syria and ask the international community to assist Turkey with its growing humanitarian crisis.
