Dickens was the longest-running member of the Grand Ole Opry. He’d been performing since the 1930’s and was known for up-tempo novelty numbers like “Take An Old Cold Tater And Wait.”

His biggest hit came in 1964 with “May the Bird of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose.” It topped the country chart for 10 weeks and landed Dickens a coveted spot on The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall Of Fame in 1983.

In a statement on Twitter, Brad Paisley wrote, “Jimmy made more out of his time in earth than anyone I’ve ever known; an incredible life in every measurable way… I think everyone who ever met him loved him instantly…and forever.”
