BLACKFOOT — A North Dakota man allegedly led law enforcement on a chase that ended with the discovery of over 4 pounds of illegal narcotics.
According to court documents, Jamie Edmond Jones, 40, brought 945 grams of methamphetamine, 200 grams of cocaine, 833 grams of fentanyl, and over 3 ounces of marijuana into the state from California. An Idaho State Police trooper reported that the contents were found in the trunk of the rented vehicle, inside a briefcase and a black backpack.
Jones made his first appearance in Magistrate’s court on May 19, where he was arraigned on several counts of drug possession and one count of eluding law enforcement while recklessly driving.
Court documents show that while patrolling Interstate 86 at 11 p.m. on Monday, the trooper became suspicious of Jones’ pattern of accelerating and braking and decided to tail him. The tailing soon turned into a full chase, reaching 90 mph at one point.
The trooper’s account further states that Jones, at different periods of the chase, is described to have struck a construction sign and nearly run over a motorcyclist. It wasn’t until law enforcement used a spike strip to flatten the tires of Jones’ rental vehicle that they were able to detain him.
Court documents show that Jones claimed he was targeted by the trooper due to his race.
Records show dispatch informed the trooper of Jones’ “previous drug trafficking charges” and “his extensive criminal history.”
Jones is expected to appear for his preliminary hearing on May 28 at 8:30 a.m.
Jones has not yet been assigned a public defender. EastIdahoNews.com will reach out when he has one assigned and will update as the case progresses.
