According to a press release from the West Virginia State Police, the officers had pulled over a white Chevrolet SUV with a North Carolina license plate after the plate had been identified as stolen. During the course of the stop, a second vehicle, identified as a red Chevrolet truck, also pulled over.

Police say the driver of the red truck shot both officers with a handgun. Both officers were wounded.

One of the officers shot the suspect in the leg with his firearm. The suspect fled over a hillside, but was later taken into custody by the Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Department. The driver of the white SUV fled the scene, but later turned himself in to law enforcement. Police say that the suspects claim to be father and son.

Police searched the truck and found two recently deceased bodies hidden under a mattress. The victims are believed to be from North Carolina, though authorities are still working to identify the victims.

No information was immediately released regarding the medical status of the officers.
