Undocumented Immigrants Can Apply for Driver’s Licenses in California
Published at(LOS ANGELES) — Thanks to a law that went into effect on New Year’s Day, undocumented immigrants in California can now legally acquire a driver’s license.
Jessica Gonzalez of the California Department of Motor Vehicles told ABC News that 900 workers had been hired to deal with the anticipated rush of applications.
The California DMV expects as many as 1.4 million people to apply for licenses.
Applicants would be required to take the driver’s test and get insurance before they could receive a license.
Supporters of the law say that it aims to make the roads safer and eliminate hit-and-run accidents.
The Los Angeles Times says that California became the 10th state to allow undocumented immigrants to apply for special licenses.
