That’s one of the tips from researchers at the University of Guelph in Canada, who found that anxiety is perhaps the greatest deterrent to getting hired, no matter how qualified an applicant might be.

In an experiment of mock interviews involving 125 undergrads, 18 interviewers analyzed both the performance and anxiety of the participants to determine who would likely get the job and who wouldn’t.

One of the more noticeable flaws was that nervous candidates tended to talk a lot slower than usual, giving off the impression of uncertainty.

Although perhaps easier said than done, researchers Amanda Feiler and Deborah Powell recommend that potential interviewees work on exuding both assertiveness and a sense of warmth that can work toward their advantage.
