Jefferson County residents consider creating new county

RIGBY — A group of Terreton-area residents are seeking to succeed from Jefferson County in order to create a new county.

The proposed local government is tentatively called West Jefferson County. According to a report in the Jefferson Star, the new county would be home to about approximately 2,274 people, leaving Jefferson County with around 22,000 people. But West Jefferson would get most of the land in the present-day Jefferson County.

The major impetus for the proposal is distribution of taxes among the population in Jefferson County.

East Idaho News Reporter Mark Richardson spoke with group members and local legislators about the possible split in the clip above.
