New construction coming in Rexburg

REXBURG — The construction in Rexburg this year includes a Walmart Supercenter and Walmart gas station, BYU-Idaho Dormitory Housing, the North McDonalds remodel, and several other major projects.

In April of 2014 there were 182 permits issued. In April of this year there were 241 permits issued. Donna Benfield the Executive Director of the Rexburg Area Chamber of Commerce—believes that the increase in construction will have a positive influence on the Rexburg community. “I think everybody realizes that Rexburg is the happening place. Our projection for growth are great, our business climate are great. I think people are very optimistic.”

Blair Kay—the Rexburg City Clerk—said that city’s economic growth is slowly expanding. “As far as economic growth the city is a slow trend upward. As people spend more money in town the dollar circulates locally. As population grows as BYU brings a thousand students in each year that adds to the slow growth.”

Benfield said that the jobs being created are service industry jobs but she would like to see more high tech industry jobs created. “There are a lot of people who are underemployed and that means they are working at a level that is less than what they’re capable of because they love living in this area. We would help the local community as well as new comers if we were able to provide higher paying positions.”

Other projects this year include BYU-Idaho Heat Plant, BYU-Idaho Science and Technology Building, BYU-Idaho Agriculture Center, Providence Square Apartments, Providence Square Storage Units, and more.
