(MESA, Ariz.) — Police in Arizona are investigating the deaths of a mother and her special needs child in a possible murder-suicide.

Early Saturday morning, a 27-year-old mother and her 5-year-old son with dystonic cerebral palsy were found dead in their hospital room at Banner Children’s Hospital.

According to police in Mesa, the mother took her son’s life and then her own. She reportedly died of a gunshot wound, but investigators did not reveal how the child died.

“Someone checked on them at approximately midnight,” said Mesa Arizona Police Detective Steve Berry. “Mom and child were sleeping in the room and when they returned for the 2 a.m. check, that is when they were discovered.”

According to ABC News affiliate KNXV‑TV, the boy had been in the hospital for about a week.

No motive for the apparent murder-suicide has been determined by officials.
