Longtime Representative Linden Bateman talks about his retirement

BOISE — A longtime Idaho Falls representative won’t seek re-election this year and says he wants to spend more time with his family.

Rep. Linden B. Bateman, R-Idaho Falls, has served in the Idaho House of Representatives since 2010. He also previously served five terms from 1977 until 1986. He tells EastIdahoNews.com that it’s time for a change.

“I love my family very much. They have always been a great support and I would like to spend more time with them,” Bateman said.

The 75-year-old represents District 33 Seat B and sits on the House Resources and Conservation, Transportation and Defense, and State Affairs committees.

Bateman, a retired educator, said he believes his greatest achievement in Idaho government has been his role in helping make Idahoans more aware of the state’s heritage. Bateman sponsored House Bill 378 in 2014, which recognizes March 4 as “Idaho Day.”

“It’s a day to celebrate Idaho’s culture and history,” he said.

Bateman said the day is significant because it marks the day Abraham Lincoln declared the Territory of Idaho. Bateman searched through the capitol archives and found the original document. He made copies and shared them with his constituents.

At this point, Bateman has not endorsed a successor. But he is excited for new blood in the legislature.

“I’ll be honest. I don’t believe in term limits,” Bateman said. “It takes a few years for the new guys to get their feet on the ground, and then the real work begins. But I’m 75 years old. I’d say it’s time for some new people to get involved, it’s time for another to take the opportunity to serve. Idaho needs new opinions and new ideas, I’m not ashamed to say so.”
