Drivers asked to use ‘extreme caution’ after semi hauling molasses spills on I-86

The following is a news release from the Power County Sheriff’s Office.

At approximately 5:22 a.m. Wednesday, the Power County Sheriff’s Office started receiving 911 calls about a semi crash. When the deputy arrived on scene at I86 East Bound, marker 22, there was a semi tanker on its side.

The driver was momentarily trapped inside, and advised that he had been hauling molasses. Molasses spilled out of the tanker and off the side of the road.

The cause of the accident is unknown at this time and is under investigation. The driver was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Until further notice, we strongly recommend that people driving through I86 between mile markers 22- 24 use extreme caution as the smell from the molasses will draw wildlife to the area.
