Former Idaho Falls daycare employee arrested in Florida after allegations of molesting 5-year-old

IDAHO FALLS — Police say a former employee of an Idaho Falls daycare is behind bars for allegedly molesting a 5-year-old girl.

The Idaho Falls Police Department arrested David Sherill, 29, of West Valley, Utah, when they found him in Kissimmee, Florida, on April 9. According to an IFPD news release, Sherill fled Idaho after learning of the investigation that opened on Aug. 11 after someone not in law enforcement posted about the investigation on social media.

Police say that a daycare employee contacted detectives when the girl said Sherill had sexually abused her. In June 2020, the daycare fired Sherill after staff repeatedly told him to stop asking the children at the daycare for hugs and to sit on his lap.

During an interview with investigators, police say the girl disclosed Sherill would touch her genitals while in the daycare’s bathroom. Police also spoke with other potential victims at the daycare. One child did not say they were abused but did say they spotted Sherill going into the bathroom with children when other employees were not there.

Detectives later learned Sherrill was arrested and convicted of sexually abusing a 4-year-old girl in Phoenix, Arizona, in 2006 when he was 15-year-old. Police say the descriptions of abuse from the juvenile case were similar to the allegations of abuse in Idaho Falls.

Sherill was held in the Florida jail until being brought back to Idaho Falls on Wednesday. He remains held in jail and is expected to make an initial appearance Thursday afternoon on a felony lewd conduct with a child charge.
