AMMON — A local fire department is inviting families and kids to an event where they can have a station tour, meet firefighters and dogs, and learn about fire prevention.

The event is a “Fire Prevention Open House,” which will take place Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It’s at 2137 South Ammon Road.

“We are doing an open house to interact with the public, to give out some fire safety messages and make sure families and small children understand what to do,” said Jon Molbert with Bonneville County Fire District No. 1 Ammon Division.

The month of October is fire prevention month. “In a fire, mere seconds can mean the difference between a safe escape and a tragedy,” according to the National Fire Protection Association.

Below are important things to know to plan a home fire escape:

  • Plan your escape route
  • Test your smoke alarms
  • Choose an outside meeting place
  • Make a regular reminder
  • Practice a home fire drill

Molbert said at the open house on Saturday, there will be several activities set up for kids and adults to get an idea of what firefighters’ everyday training is like. They will also be showing people around the station, engines, and equipment and answering questions.

He added that the Chaplains of Idaho will be there.

“They will be bringing their dogs. Those animals will be here to interact with the public, and the chaplains will be interacting with the public as well and sharing with them what they do,” Molbert said.

Molbert welcomes anybody to come and says it’s an opportunity to give kids positive experiences with firefighters.

“A lot of times, they see us when something is going wrong, and so we want to give them good memories as well,” he said.
