Mystery solved! This is the source of the loud ‘boom’ sounds in Jefferson County.

RIGBY — After months of wondering what was causing loud “boom” sounds across Jefferson County, we finally have an answer.
According to Jefferson County Prosecutor Paul Butikofer, the sounds were caused by local minors who were allegedly setting off explosions.
On Dec. 27, a Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputy was patrolling when he saw a “large explosion and fireball erupt in the sky,” according to a news release from Butikofer’s office.

The deputy went toward the area and identified five minors who were involved in creating the explosions. The kids would fill milk jugs and similar containers with gasoline and place them near Tannerite, a brand of binary explosive targets used for firearms practice.
The minors would then shoot the Tannerite, causing it to ignite and “in turn, ignite the gasoline, creating a large explosion and fireball,” according to the release.
Butikofer says the kids have “been identified and educated on the dangerous nature of their actions and have received appropriate consequences through the juvenile system.” Their names were not released.
