Living fully in the light of faith

Thomas S. Monson’s wise words offer a simple yet profound roadmap for a meaningful life: learn from the past, prepare for the future, and most importantly, live in the present.

Spiritually, this echoes a recurring biblical theme—God meets us in the now. While our past may be filled with both victories and regrets, its purpose is not to imprison us but to instruct us. The lessons we’ve gathered from past experiences become stepping stones, not stumbling blocks, when viewed through the lens of grace and growth.

As we look toward the future, faith encourages us to prepare—not with anxiety, but with trust. Proverbs 16:9 reminds us, “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” Spiritual preparation isn’t about knowing every detail ahead; it’s about aligning our hearts with God’s will, remaining prayerful, and cultivating hope in the promises yet to come. Our future is not a mystery to Him, and when we walk closely with Him, our preparation becomes an act of worship and trust.

And yet, the present moment is where God does His most intimate work. This very moment is a sacred gift—a chance to love, to serve, to breathe, and to grow. Too often we get stuck in what was or paralyzed by what might be. But Jesus Himself taught us to focus on today: “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself” (Matthew 6:34). Living fully in the present is a spiritual discipline. It means being aware, being grateful, and being willing to see God’s hand at work right here, right now. Let us release the past, prepare with faith for the future, and embrace the beauty and purpose of the present.
