Living with open hands and a generous heart

Billy Graham once said, “God has given us two hands, one to receive with and the other to give with.” This simple yet profound image reminds us of the beautiful balance of grace and generosity in the Christian life. One hand is open to receive all that God so freely gives — His mercy, His provision, His love — and the other hand remains open to pour out those blessings onto others. We are not called to be containers of God’s goodness, but conduits through which His love flows into the lives of those around us.

Scripture supports this rhythm of receiving and giving. In 2 Corinthians 9:11, Paul writes, “You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion.” Everything we have — our time, resources, and talents — is a gift from God, not to be hoarded, but to be shared. When we give with joy and compassion, we reflect the character of Christ, who gave everything for us. Generosity isn’t just about finances; it’s about living a life of open-handed kindness, where we see the needs of others and respond with love.

Spiritually, this lifestyle teaches us to trust God as our provider and to view giving as an act of worship. It shifts our hearts from scarcity to abundance, reminding us that we can always afford to be generous, because we serve a God who never runs out. As we receive His blessings with gratitude and give them away with purpose, we discover a deeper joy and a stronger connection to both God and those around us. Let us live with hands that are always ready—to receive grace and to give it just as freely.
