SANDPOINT — Two people were killed in separate crashes on Idaho highways over the weekend.

The first crash occurred around 11:20 a.m. Sunday on U.S. Highway 95 near Sandpoint in Bonner County.

Investigators said a 40-year-old Ponderay man driving a Honda Fit northbound pulled over to allow a Toyota Tacoma, driven by a 26-year-old Sandpoint man, to pass. As the vehicles passed each other, they made contact, causing the Toyota to cross the center line and collide with a southbound GMC Sierra driven by a 66-year-old woman.

A Subaru Forester traveling behind the GMC then struck the pickup from behind.

The GMC driver died at the scene. Idaho State Police said she was not wearing a seat belt. The drivers of the Honda, Toyota and Subaru were wearing seat belts. Alcohol and drugs are not believed to have been factors in the crash.

In a separate fatal crash Sunday night, a 49-year-old Arizona woman died after a two-vehicle collision on Interstate 184 in Boise.

Police said a 29-year-old Boise man driving a 2018 Acura TLX rear-ended a 2015 Toyota Highlander driven by a 31-year-old Chandler, Arizona man at approximately 10:59 p.m. near mile marker 3 on the westbound connector.

The impact caused the Toyota to leave the roadway, strike concrete landscaping structures and overturn before coming to rest back in the travel lanes.

All five occupants of the Toyota were taken to a local hospital. A 49-year-old female passenger from Chandler later died from her injuries. All occupants of both vehicles were wearing seat belts, according to police.

The westbound lanes of I-184 were closed for nearly four hours while emergency crews investigated.

Both crashes remain under investigation by Idaho State Police.
