IDAHO FALLS — The roadway on East 25th Street and South 25th East/Hitt Road, near Target, is now open, and drivers can turn left.

Officials from Ammon and Idaho Falls got into a van and commemorated the event by turning left through the ribbon and onto South 25th East/Hitt Road.

Ammon Mayor Dana Kirkham and City Councilman Brad Christensen, and Idaho Falls Mayor Rebecca Casper and City Council President Mike Letho spoke at the ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday, Nov. 9.

“This is really about allowing better accessibility for the shopping center, about better mobility for the citizens,” Christensen said. “This has been a point of frustration for a long time. We’re just so pleased to see the communities come together, and (they) cooperated with the corporate partners.”

According to an Idaho Falls news release, work began about a month ago to construct the new traffic signal and an exit-only roadway behind Target. This project was a joint effort between the cities of Idaho Falls and Ammon. Christensen said the total cost for the project came in around $200,000.

“It’s a lot more difficult than you think it would be, to do something that’s so needed, but I’m just so glad to have it now functioning and people turning left out here,” Christensen said.

After the ribbon-cutting, family of former Idaho councilman Dee Whittier as well as officials addressed a nearby tree that was planted in his memory. He was also a part of the collaborative effort for the intersection.
