FORT HALL — A homeless man was injured after being hit by a Union Pacific freight train on Wednesday afternoon in rural Bingham County.

The incident happened after noon along U.S. Highway 91 near Truchot Road, north of Fort Hall on the reservation.

Bingham County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Jordyn Nebeker said the man was walking on the tracks.

Lt. Jeremy Hook told EastIdahoNews.com the man didn’t move for the train and was then hit.

“He went under the train and at some point, one of his arms were severed,” Hook said.

The man was transported by a Fort Hall ambulance and taken to Portneuf Medical Center.

It’s not known what his condition is at the hospital however, Hook said he was told the man was going to undergo surgery.

Deputies are continuing to investigate why the man was on the tracks.

The man’s name and age have not been released.
