IDAHO FALLS – A man was arrested after allegedly speeding away from officers and being caught with stolen items from multiple car burglaries as well as drug-related items.

Javier Marquez-Avila, 20, was charged with two counts of felony burglary, one count of felony fleeing or attempting to elude an officer, misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance, and misdemeanor use or possession of drug paraphernalia.

On Oct. 7, around 3:22 a.m., an Idaho Falls police officer was dispatched to a home after a reporting party said two men broke into her car.

The woman said one of the men was wearing a ski mask and driving a blue sedan with Colorado plates, according to court documents.

The officer spotted the sedan on Homer Avenue and Rosewood Circle and watched as it stopped directly in front of the patrol car.

The officer activated the lights on the patrol car and told the driver to turn off the car.

The driver, later identified as Marquez-Avila, reportedly “maneuvered around (the) patrol vehicle and began to travel northbound on Homer Avenue toward John Adams Parkway,” according to the police report.

The officer continued to chase Marquez-Avila as he continued to drive east on John Adams Parkway. According to court documents, Marquez-Avila was driving around 70 mph in a 30 mph speed zone.

Marquez-Avila reportedly continued east on John Adams Parkway and ran through a red light, “almost striking a vehicle traveling southbound on Woodruff Avenue.”

According to the police report, Marquez-Avila then turned southbound onto South 25th East at about 50 mph.

Eventually, he turned into the Sportsman’s Warehouse parking lot, where he was taken into custody.

Officers searched the car, where they reportedly found “a plastic pipe with a metal straw with burnt-on residue in plain view,” according to court documents.

Also found in the car were “multiple purses, tools and debit cards, not in (Marquez-Avila’s) name.”

An officer contacted one of the victims, whose name was on one of the debit cards. She confirmed that her items in the car were stolen.

Another victim confirmed that his car had been broken into and ransacked, which is how his debit card probably ended up in Marquez-Avila’s car.

Officers also found a “brand new pair of Nike tennis shoes” in a bag containing a bank card that did not belong to Marquez-Avila.

The items were then returned to the victims.

During a further search of the car, officers reportedly found a package containing two green THC edibles. Inside a black duffle bag, an officer discovered “multiple drug paraphernalia items such as a rolling tray, THC concentrate containers, and THC concentrate wands.”

Also found was a “white powdery substance resembling cocaine inside two coffee filters,” which was sent to a state lab for further testing.

During the investigation, officers learned that Marquez-Avila had a full extradition felony warrant for assault out of Colorado.

Marquez-Avila was arrested and booked into the Bonneville County Jail, where his bond was set to $60,000. He posted bail and was sent to pre-trial supervision on Oct. 10.

He is expected to appear for a preliminary hearing on Oct. 18. If convicted, he could face up to 27 years in prison.

Though Marquez-Avila has been charged with these crimes, it does not necessarily mean he committed them. Everyone is presumed innocent until they are proven guilty.
