BOISE — A 17-year-old from Eagle has won a statewide award for his 90-second video about the benefits of living a substance-free lifestyle.
Kobe Humphries, a junior at Eagle High School, is the grand prize winner of Idaho Public Television’s Welcome to the Unaltered State teen video contest for his portrayal of the downside of youth substance use and the upside of engaging in activities that are real and lasting.
“The first time I saw Kobe’s video it made me cry,” says Idaho Public Television executive producer and campaign manager Jennie Sue Weltner. “I still get goose bumps every time I watch it because his message is so inspiring and hopeful.”
Welcome to the Unaltered State is a statewide campaign designed to change attitudes, knowledge and behaviors about youth substance use in Idaho and to encourage a substance-free lifestyle. Weltner explains that the contest videos are an important way to make sure youth have a voice in the campaign.
“Our campaign is not just about saying no to vapes, drugs and alcohol; it’s about saying yes to something better,” explains Weltner. “And Kobe’s video totally captured that essence.”
The Welcome to the Unaltered State teen video contest was open to all Idaho 12-to-18-year-olds. Creators were asked to produce a video, no longer than 90 seconds, that empowers youth not to use substances. Teens from Lewiston to Bear Lake submitted videos.
Twenty-eight entries received prizes ranging from $500 for first place, $300 for second place, $200 for third place and $25 for honorable mention. Winning videos will be broadcast on IdahoPTV and shared across social media channels. Watch Humphries’ video and all winning videos at idahoptv.org/unaltered2025.
“Watching the videos these kids created, they share education from the programs that we offer and leave an inspirational message for peers and community members,” says contest judge Heather Hansen, a Health Education Specialist Senior in eastern Idaho’s public health district. “I wish we could share them all. They leave you with a smile and valuable information.”
The Welcome to the Unaltered State campaign was developed by Idaho Public Television in partnership with the Idaho Millennium Fund.
