IONA — Games, food trucks, music and more are back for the summer, and one local city is inviting the community to come together and have a good time.

The city of Iona is putting on Family Game Night starting on Tuesday, June 10. It’s every other Tuesday (weather permitting) all summer long in the town square at Iona City Park, and it’s free. It’s from 6 to 8 p.m. and is sponsored by Colling Pest Solutions. Click here for more information on the specific dates.

“It’s a wholesome environment. Everyone can come together and just make some memories,” said city event coordinator Diana Estrada. “We have all ages come. I’ve seen infants all the way up to grandparents and great-grandparents.”

There are giant yard games along with jump ropes, frisbees and chalk.

“Things like giant Connect 4, I’ve got a giant KerPlunk game, we’ve got Yardzee, which is Yahtzee, but it’s with giant wooden dice,” Estrada said. “We’ve got 9 Square in the Air, all kinds of different games just for every age that you can think of.”

Estrada came up with the idea last year. She wanted something over the summer where families could get together outside and enjoy the weather. That’s when she came up with family game nights and got a bunch of outdoor games. Last year was such a hit that it had to happen again this year, she said.

One night, it brought a couple of hundred people out.

“It’s just an absolute blast,” she said. “Sometimes people get super competitive over the games. I’ve never seen cornhole get so competitive! It’s just great. Everyone’s laughing and having a good time, and it warms my heart to see how well this came together.”

The Corndog Company and Lemon Smashers will be in attendance in case people want to grab a bite to eat. Music will be playing in the background too.

While it’s geared as a city of Iona event, others are welcome.

“Iona is a really close-knit community, and so it is mostly Iona residents, but we’re not going to turn anybody away if you want to come and have fun. You’re welcome to join us!” Estrada added.
