TREMONTON, Utah – A domestic disturbance call turned deadly Sunday night when two Tremonton Garland Police Department officers were shot and killed, and a Box Elder County deputy and police service dog were wounded.

The incident began around 9 p.m. when dispatchers received multiple 911 hang-up calls from a home near 700 North 200 East, according to a news release from the Brigham City Police Department. An officer who responded began speaking with a resident about a reported disturbance when a man emerged from the house with a gun and opened fire.

The officer was struck and killed. A second Tremonton Garland officer who arrived moments later was also shot and killed.

When a Box Elder County Sheriff’s Deputy responded to assist, the suspect fired multiple rounds into their vehicle. The deputy and their K-9 partner inside the patrol vehicle were both hit.

“After being hit by gunfire, the deputy and police service dog remained in their vehicle and were subsequently evacuated to an area hospital and specialty veterinary clinic where they received medical treatment,” the news release says. “Both are recovering and in fair condition.”

Police say the suspect eventually put down his weapon after being persuaded by bystanders. He was taken into custody and booked into the Box Elder County Jail on multiple charges, including aggravated murder. SWAT teams cleared the residence to ensure no further threats.

The Weber County Attorney’s Office is leading the homicide investigation.

“Tragedies like these rock an entire community, state and even nation. These officers and their families served theirs every day, and they will forever be remembered as heroes,” the news release says. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Tremonton Garland Police Department, Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office, and the families of those involved. We are grateful for the swift response from multiple agencies from Box Elder, Weber, and Cache Counties.”
